Chapter Twelve

Noah

As I emerged from sleep, the pain rippled up from my calf in waves. Emeric had cast another numbing spell on it a couple of hours ago when we’d set up camp, and I didn’t like how quickly its effect had faded. The last thing I wanted was to be constantly calling on him for help.

I shifted on my bed of leaves, careful not to move that leg any more than I had to, and murmured a spell of my own. Numbing was basic first aid—we all learned it in the first year of our magical studies. But my magic was pretty drained. I didn’t want to risk going completely dry when we had no idea how much distance we’d actually put between us and our pursuers.

The pain only dulled a little. It was enough relief for me to doze off into another hazy stretch of sleep, but every crackle and rustle in the forest hit me with a jolt of adrenaline. After the thunderstorm had interrupted our daytime rest, we’d decided to spend some of tonight recuperating, but I wasn’t managing to accomplish much of that, as hard as I’d been trying.

The reapers had almost caught us. I was practically crippled now until we could reach someone who knew a full range of healing techniques. I had to stay sharp, had to be at my best in every other possible way until then.

Unfortunately, knowing that only made it harder to wind down.

The rain had washed away a lot of the summer heat, and the temperature had dropped even more overnight. In my still slightly damp clothes, the brush of the breeze felt almost chilly. I debated scavenging for more fallen leaves to thicken my makeshift blanket, but the thought only made me feel more tired. So I just drifted a little more in my uncomfortable state until I got too restless to keep trying.

I sat up carefully and quietly, with a soft casting word to check that the wards we’d set up around our camp were still active. Then I glanced around the spot. Cressida and Emeric were sprawled under their own blankets of leaves, Cressida’s pulled all the way to her ears. Her pale braid, which she’d painstakingly rewoven last night, poked out from beneath.

As I watched, a shiver ran through her form, and she curled her knees up higher under the leaves. My chest constricted. She was cold too.

If things had been normal between us, if I could have touched her without worrying that it’d be a reminder of some of the worst times in her life, I’d have gone over and wrapped my arms around her, sharing my warmth. But as much as I ached to do that, I suspected it wouldn’t actually comfort her in the long run. Instead, I murmured a thin wash of heated air over her body to take the edge off the chill.

It looked as if she relaxed a little. At least I’d helped somehow or other.

My own arms were breaking out in goosebumps now that I’d shed my blanket.
